"There are tear-dimmed eyes in the town today
There are lips to be no more kissed
There are bosoms that swell with an aching heart
When they think of their dear ones missed.
But time will assuage their heartfelt grief
Of their sons they will proudly tell
How in gallant charge in the world wide war
As Pals they fought and fell."
This lyrical, absorbing play is set in Accrington, a typical Lancashire mill town during 1914-16. The "Pals" are the men from the local volunteer battalion who march high-spiritedly off to the Great War with their experiences in the trenches contrasted with those of the women left behind to face social changes, deprivation and the lies of propaganda. At times funny, at times sad, it paints a moving and powerful picture of the changes in civilian life during wartime and the suffering of everyday people.
